Reuters Video News (February 2015 - Current)
UK Video Journalist I work as a video journalist, field producer and reporter, in a small team covering UK News. Duties include conducting interviews, planning and executing television package features and responding to breaking news. The role involves filming, editing and producing from the field and on the editorial desk. I have reported on camera and edited video packages for the Reuters TV App. As a multimedia journalist I work closely with and sometimes file for the Reuters text and picture wires, and have had work published by the world’s top media outlets. In the UK bureau I have deputised for the Senior Producer, with a 24 hour responsibility for any major stories. The job involves travelling at short notice worldwide. I’ve reported on stories across the world from the field including: the 2015 migrant crisis, British General Elections, Brexit, NATO military exercises on the Black Sea, the 2016 U.S Election final debate in Las Vegas, mass protests in Romania, a papal visit and .multiple international elections and referenda.
Reuters Video News - Freelance (June 2013 – January 2015)
Intake, Output and Live Producer. Working closely with the Intake editor, taking responsibility for video filed from Reuters’ reporters in the field from across the world. The role involved having to make editorial decisions on breaking stories and helping to directly co-ordinate live broadcasts between producers at the scene and the desk in London. I produced video packages, scripts and assisted our correspondents from our headquarters.
Field Producer and Cameraman. In late 2014, I spent six weeks in the Balkans, working across the Belgrade and Sarajevo bureaus. This included covering Bosnia’s presidential elections, a state visit by Vladimir Putin and a controversial Euro 2016 qualifier between Serbia and Albania. During this time I filmed, edited and scripted stories for the video news agency.
Social Media Producer. This position included sourcing and verifying amateur video, as well as identifying, cultivating and contacting key sources to assist with Reuters’ coverage on breaking news. I helped to drive Reuters TV’s social media coverage worldwide and co-authored a guide on verifying user-generated content. Notable successes in the role included being the first agency to obtain and verify material following the MH17 plane disaster and sourcing video coverage of the rise of Islamic State (ISIS).
The Guardian (March 2012 – July 2014)
Freelance Video Producer.This included generating video content at the newspaper for the multimedia section of the website, Facebook page and iPad application. I edited video content from news agencies using Final Cut Pro. Other responsibilities involved writing copy and voiceovers to accompany videos. I have also conducted and filmed my own video investigations for the newspaper.
Reuters TV Bangkok (June 2012 - July 2012)
Freelance Video Journalist / Intern. I conducted interviews, filmed and edited video content for the video agency to be transmitted to clients all over the world. I researched and produced stories independently as well as working with a small team of producers and other cameramen to contribute to the bureau’s video output.
Yorkshire Radio (October 2011 - May 2013)
Football Reporter.This involved conducting post match interviews with players and managers at Football League clubs. These interviews were broadcast throughout the week on the DAB station.
Technical Skills and Interests
I am a confident, ambitious person and a fast learner. I am pro-trained in Final Cut Pro 7 and Final Cut Pro X video editing software. In addition I have a range of cross platform skills with programs such as Edius, Newscaster Lite, Avid Media Composer and Newscutter, Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. I can light interviews, edit packages and operate a wide range of broadcast and large sensor cameras including Panasonic 2100 and 270, Canon C300, Sony FS5, FS7 and A7S. I also own a Canon C100. I can operate LIVE-U devices and broadcast live video from the field using cameras or smartphones.
I have demonstrated my commitment to undertake a career in journalism through my extensive work and experience. I love to travel and have visited countries all over the world, making many friends and contacts. I feel lucky to have been able to combine this with my interest in writing and video journalism by working in Thailand, the Balkans, the U.S and the UK for Reuters.
During my career so far I’ve sought to pitch new pieces and looked to find innovative ways in which to present them, embracing changing technology. I enjoy broadcast and multimedia journalism; particularly politics, sports, business, international affairs and investigative journalism and hope to one day pursue a career as a foreign correspondent.
My passion for this field of work comes from wanting to tell the stories of people and how their lives interact with the major issues of the day, using their personal experiences to explain to a wider audience why these things are important, how it affects them and ultimately to hold power to account.
